• Hello everyone,

is there anyone who has taken a mobility aid, example -a scooter (which is powered by lithium battery)on a plane?

      • I have batteries on my wheelchair. I don’t know if there are lithium, the important thing you have to do is to call the air company and give them all the specific to the competent department and the IATA certification etc etc, so they can register your aid.

        • I have done this 4-5x from SG to Indonesia & Australia. Just need to remove the lithium batteries & hand carry onto the flight. Also show them the batteries specs sheet. No issue at all for me 🙂

Just allow more time during check in for assistance.

          • We traveled with an ECO ASSIST (third wheel) from France to Japan and back with Air France. They only required us to remove the lithium batteries and carry them in the cabin. However, keep in mind that many airlines have a limit on the watt-hours (Wh) of lithium batteries allowed on board. For a domestic flight within France, we encountered a subsidiary airline that did not accept the device, forcing us to switch to another airline.

            • We use a manual wheelchair but on a flight a couple of days ago there was a powered wheelchair and in addition to providing the airline with the battery details they had to remove it from the wheelchair and carry it on board in a fire resistant bag.

              • Thank you, everyone. I’m traveling to Japan and before booking my flight, I confirmed with the airline that there would be no issue bringing my scooter and its battery, which is under 300Wh. However, after completing my booking, they requested the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, subsection 38.3from the manufacturer.

The supplier advised me to send a copy of the yellow booklet, which is a flight safety certificate, but the airline has refused to accept it. I found the manufacturer’s contact numbers in the booklet, but I haven’t been able to reach them. This is incredibly stressful because I rely on my scooter for mobility and without it, I don’t know how I’ll manage:(

                • @Pam I just saw this posted: https://www.tabifolk.com/members/ohayotravel/activity/48769/#activity-48769

I also did a little research and I don’t think mobility scooters are used too much in Japan, but not sure how accurate that is. I have a foldable electric wheelchair instead, hopefully that will be allowed.

                  • Thanks a lot for your replies. Where can I rent electric wheelchair in Osaka(6 days)Kyoto(4) and Tokyo (10)? Please if anyone knows to send me the link and phone numbers so I can contact them before my travel because I am afraid of not having mobility aid. Thanks again!
