MemberSeconding @joshgrisdale on the share ability of a hotspot. I travelled with my husband and we could both use our phones and tablets from it.
I have rented a WiFi hotspot in Japan twice and I think it’s totally worth it. We used it mostly for maps and if we needed to translate anything.

you pick it up at the airport and then drop it off in the mail on your way home. Couldn’t have been easier.

I know @schroth-sensei has first hand experience he could share.
You can download Google Maps data as well as language sets on Google translate (app), so you could get by without if you really want to.
Some restaurants might have it, but a lot don’t.
I’d suggest you first contact your local provider and see what your plan offers…
