• Hi there, I am a blind individual who is hoping to visit Japan this fall. I am curious if Japan treats sighted guides like Canada does. Here I can travel on planes, trains and buses as well as visit museums and certain attractions and my cited guide would be able to travel with me either for free or at a heavily reduced cost.

      • Hi! Great to hear you are planning on visiting Japan.

First of all, domestic flights do have discounts, but I’m pretty sure international flights don’t. (I went back to Canada a few weeks ago and had to pay full price for my care giver on Air Canada.) However I think if you are going on a domestic flight in Japan with a discount, you would need a Japanese issued disability ID.

As for discounts on rail, you would again need a Japanese disability ID.

For tourist attractions you might have a bit more luck. But still there you might want to prepare a translation of some sort of local disability ID/card.
