  • Airport via Narita Express or Keisei and train to Kyoto

We’re traveling as a family of 3 in a couple weeks. I’m bringing my Whill C2 electric wheelchair, but my other two family members are ambulatory. We’re landing in Narita. I’ve read conflicting information– that I need to reserve a seat in advance and that it’s better to just wait to get a seat/ticket on either the Narita Express or Keisei when…

      Hello ☺️

There are two types of wheelchair seats on the Shinkansen: those that allow you to remain in your wheelchair, and those that allow you to transfer from your wheelchair to a regular seat. The former is more of a “space reservation” than a “seat.” The latter not only reserves a space, but also allows you to use the seat next to you as… Read more

      • I think you do need reservations for Narita Express or Keisei SkyLiner. But there are also regular express trains that you can just get on. So, while waiting for another answer, at least be reassured you will have an option no matter what.

      • Accessibility in restaurants

I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user – I can stand and walk with canes but steps and stairs are hard for me. Any tips for finding wheelchair accessible restaurants (aside from the info on Accessible Japan) and if a restaurant is too small to navigate with a wheelchair, it is ok/safe to leave my wheelchair outside the restaurant while I just use…

        • We had great luck on the top floors of department stores … generally a variety of restaurants, easy elevator access, and you can eyeball which will fit a wheelchair (though leaving outside was an option..) Bonus is sometimes you get city views too :-).

          • Hi there! I am also partially ambulatory and had no issues either leaving my wheelchair (it’s foldable) near the restaurant entrance or even outside (like at a mall or food court).

        • Scenic Train rides in Japan.

Hi everyone, I’m planning to be in Japan for 10-14 days later this year. I would like to go on as many scenic train rides as possible while I’m there. I have looked up a few online like the Sagano Romantic train ride but that one is open air which might be really cold at the end of December. Are the Shinkansen moving so fast you can’t see the…

          • The Shinkansen is designed to go from A to B as fast as possible. This means plenty of tunnels and noise barriers, all of which block the view. December and January is not the best time for scenic trains except in mountain areas. There’s information on the Internet listing the most scenic trains (search for Joyful Train on JR East website) but…

            • Thank you, this is what I’m looking for. I know it’s not the best season to visit Japan but it is when we are having our anniversary. Beautiful mountains covered in snow will be a wonderful welcome sight. I live in the swamp in Louisiana so I want to see mountains even if you think they all look the same. But yes please recommend any train…

            • Fuji Excursion Limited Express Train

Hello! My husband I will be traveling from Shinjuku Station to Kawaguchiko in February. We are hoping to take the FUJI EXCURSION limited express train. I haven’t found a way to reserve a wheelchair accessible seat for this train online. We are located in Canada. Does anyone have experience with taking this train, and reserving…

              • If you are leaving from Shinjuku you will use the Fuji Kaiju that goes to Mt Fuji/Kawaguchiko.

As for buying them, in theory you can buy them through eki-net.com but I’m not sure you can select the accessible seat there. (I tried to quickly check but you needed an account and my login for the Japanese version didn’t work for some reason..)

                You…

                • As Josh mentioned, you can make your reservation at ticket window or online. Honestly speaking, the process to book wheelchair seats at Eki-Net is cumbersome, especially wheelchair travelers. At this point, online reservation is available for tickets for FUJI EXCURSION until February 25th, but as long as I’ve tried, seats including…
