How holiday 'trial runs' helped me build the confidence to see the world
When my mobility started getting worse I realised if I wanted to see the world, it was now or never. I quickly learned the importance of expecting the unexpected.
Too bad they didn’t use @accesstrax but glad they started on the journey to beach accessibility!

I had the privilege of volunteering in Costa Rica in 2019 for their first Open Adaptive Surf Championship and used that recycled plastic pathway in Jaco. It has its challenges (can have large gaps and is difficult to turn on and move) but it is a good start! Plus I really like how it’s made from recycled plastic (bottle caps).

I had a few bad experiences where drivers didn’t know how to fold the back seat up, let alone get the ramp ready. And a few where I was refused by the driver saying “I don’t know how, sorry”.

I was recently involved with a TV shoot and I saw something really interesting: the van with the filming equipment in it had a wheelchair lift!
The reason was that that the equipment is heavy and having the lift helped the staff lift it in and out of the van.
I thought it was a great example of how accessibility features help everyone.
