Here is a small breakdown of accessibility for those planning a trip on the Northern Explorer, Coastal Pacific or TranzAlpine trains in New Zealand. If you have first hand experience, please be sure to add a reply and share your thoughts!

    Wheelchair Accessibility:

For travelers with wheelchairs, powerchairs, or mobility scooters, the Northern Explorer, Coastal Pacific, and TranzAlpine trains in New Zealand offer wheelchair-accessible Scenic Class carriages. These specially designed spaces are located in the roomy Scenic Café carriage, providing a comfortable and accessible experience. Each wheelchair space includes a table with two seats for companions, a panoramic window for enjoying the views, and a headphone jack for GPS audio commentary. However, the Scenic Plus dining experience is currently not wheelchair accessible.

Mobility Scooter, Wheelchair, and Powerchair Restrictions:

There are specific restrictions for mobility scooters, wheelchairs, and powerchairs, including a maximum combined weight of 364kg, a maximum length of 1295mm (51in), and a maximum width of 762mm (30in).

    Hearing Impairment:

All scenic train carriages are equipped with hearing loops to assist passengers with auditory disabilities. Passengers can activate the hearing loop by selecting the ‘T’ switch on their hearing aids. While the hearing loop is not fully available in the café carriage, a microphone in that area boosts sound levels for loop users.

    Impaired Vision:

Certified assistance dogs are allowed on board, provided they remain seated, are fully accredited, and have documentation from Assistance Dogs International (ADI) or the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF).

    Making Your Booking:

When booking online, passengers can specify their accessibility requirements on the contact details page. Additionally, the comments section allows passengers to add any necessary notes for further assistance.
