Not directly travel related but you might want to try reaching out to a disability organization like this one:
They could possibly help you find transportation at least. The first time I went to Okinawa an independent living center provided transportation in exchange for a donation to the organization.

I know! Very limited information online. At this point, any information would be helpful.
You are correct… Guided tours are not preferred.
We’re now thinking about staying in Bacalar or Chetumal (Southern Mexico) and driving across the border to possibly Corzal, Belize. Even for a day trip to explore!
