Tokyo with Kids

I am going to Japan for the first time in July, Tokyo specifically. I use a small manual wheelchair but cannot walk at all. I’ll be traveling with my husband and two kids (10 and 12). Our big issue is where to stay (place that has interesting stuff in a walkable area and close to an accessible subway station).

I don’t know where to start, but when looking at accessible rooms, which I see they call universal rooms, it seems every accessible room only allows 2 people including me. I’m concerned because I don’t think my kids should be in a hotel room by themselves unless it is very close or connected to our room. They are young and do not know Japanese.

Are there any hotels that have rooms that sleep children along with people with disabilities, or does Japan, like many other countries, just think we don’t ever have families?

Also, any info about accessible transport to Mt Fuji would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,

in fact, wheelchair accessible rooms in Japan are called ‘universal’ or ‘barrier-free’.

I think it may be hard to find a big universal room, but maybe you can book a “normal” room next to your accessible room. Japan is really very sure and secure, and people are really gentle and helpful, this kind of solution may be OK I think.

For an adapted vehicle to go to Mt Fuji from Toky, you can contact @oshidori , they are very kind and nice (and can also propose a photo shooting :-))

    Regards,

I’m in the same situation as you and have been doing a lot of research. I’ve discovered that the best place to be is nearest to Tokyo train station. Which is what we are going to do. This is the main train station and you also get the Bullet Train here.

Hi, Morghan. Depending on your budget, you might try Keio Plaza to see whether they might have a room that fits your family’s needs. It is in the Shinjuku area and has accessible train station nearby and is also within walking distance of other areas and streets are very accessible for wheelchair. I’ not sure whether Ohayo Travel organizes a single day trip but if so, I’d recommend them for a trip to see Mount Fuji. We really enjoyed our experience with them, which included a trip to the beautiful Mount Fuji.

Hello Morghan. We stayed in Tokyo as a family of 4 in Mimaru Tokyo Asakusa station hotel. We did not stay in the accessible room, but I know they do have one. We stayed in a family room, which was step free. My son can take a few steps though so you would need to check if you could get into the bathroom or toilet. The hotel were very good at sending photos and measurements for doorways when asked. We loved the area and there was so much to do here.

    HI Morghan,

I recommend the Toyoko Inn Chain. Many of the hotels have a “Heartful Room” that is wheelchair accessible with shower/toilet. Very reasonable ((ABOUT 10,000 Yen) and as a bonus, they have a light breakfast buffet and washing machine / dryers in the lobby area. They are always close to a train station, so usually lots of restaurants and convenience store nearby. There’s one close to Disneyland that also provides a free shuttle. The Heartful Room B has 2 twin beds. I believe you can get another room for kids close by your room.
