Questions about Transitioning from Tourist to Finding a Job and Work Visa

    Hello,

I am curious as someone who is neurodivergent with additional invisible disabilities, how hard is it to go from being a tourist with disabilities to finding a job that would sponsor a work visa in Japan knowing that I have said disabilities?

I would be interested in one day getting permanent residency or naturalizing but that would require me to live and work in Japan for numerous years under either a work visa, business investor visa, or potentially a religious activities visa with the support of a local sponsor. Unless I were divinely blessed with a Japanese spouse, the spousal visa option is unlikely.

I was told when I was younger to try a working holiday visa and try to make connections during the time I am in Japan but x years passed and I am now 32 so that is no longer an option.

I would like to live and stay in Japan longer than the 90 days visa free and potentially rent a place but that would also be difficult for a foreigner with disabilities to do without a good support system in place.

I am considering a Japanese Language School with a Student Visa for two years, making connections, and transitioning to either a work visa or business investor visa based on connections made but I have no clue how difficult that would be.

If anyone has experience or thoughts on all of this, please give me your input. Thanks!

    Sincerely,

    Sam

    Hi,

If I remember correctly, you cannot switch from a traveller to a worker with a visa as you need to enter the country with the visa. So, even if you were to find a visa sponsor while traveling, you would need to leave, and then come back into the country on that visa.

Since this site is about travel, you might find better answers about visa on arrival site like Gaijinpot or JobsinJapan.

Thank you for letting me know, I really appreciate it. I didn’t know that even if I found a visa sponsor while in Japan, I would need to leave and wait for the visa to be processed before returning. So the 90 days visa-free as a Canadian would not be able to be extended while in Japan by applying for a new visa while in Japan. Thank you.

Yes, the visa becomes validated by entering the country with it AND if I remember correctly, you need to get the initial forms you show at immigration from a Japanese embassy in your home country. (Note this was 18 years ago for me, so a bit fuzzy 😅)
