Hi! I have Cerebral Palsy and use a power wheelchair. I’m researching for a possible vacation to Japan.

    1. Is there a caregiver agency that has people who would travel to the USA and travel back to Japan and be a caregiver/travel companion for a 3 month period? I would need someone for personal care and that could stay around the clock since I would probably be traveling alone

    2. Would I need to get a visa for that long of a stay?

    3. Are there any accessible places to stay that are not hotels?

    4. Are there accessible taxis big enough for power wheelchairs?

    5. What’s the best way to convert currency?

I’ll have more questions in the future. Thank you.

    Hello and welcome to tabifolk

I also have CP and use a power wheelchair and have moved to Japan, so it is possible!

    1. Where ever you get the helpers, you will need to pay out of pocket. There is a huge lack of helpers here, so it is likely best to bring them with you. Even when I moved here I had someone from Canada with me for about 6 months before getting into the care system here. You can possibly find some places that may offer some hours or days where they can help, but it would likely be irregular and paid out of pocket.
    2. For the US you can stay for up to 90 days without a visa I believe.
    3. There are some “apartment hotels” that have accessible rooms. A bit harder to find, but they do exist.
    4. There are a variety of accessible taxis, some are lift-equipped and would have no problems with power wheelchairs, others have ramps that can carry power wheelchair users but would depend on the size of the wheelchair (as there are many different types).
    5. These days for converting cash I’d say only bring a bit and then use your credit card/Apple Pay etc when buying things.

    Hope this helps!

Finding a place without a stair to the bathroom is like winning a lottery. In private apartments and hotels are premade bathrooms which are small and smaller or of the size of a toilet.

I’m in Tokyo right now strugling to find a suitable acomodation for my husband. When we booked the owner said that there are just 5 stairs outside building – in reallity there are 9 and not to mention other 3 before entering the bathroom. And you just need to do at least 2 to go to the bathroom.

So just be carefull when bookin. If you dont see the whole photo be sure, that there is a stair waiting for you.

Hotel Celecton in Kyoto is awesom. All without stairs.
