    Hello Everyone,

My 9 months old son was diagnosed with a autism like syndrome, Angelman which will likely make him not go to normal school. My husband and I are supposed to move there. within the next 3 years. Do you know if Japan has good support and facility for children like my son ? I’m beginning to search on my own but if you have info on establishments or heard of something, I would love to hear about it. Anywhere in Japan is fine. Thank you so much and happy new year.

    Hello Margaux

In short, the answer is yes. As long as you are residing in Japan (ie have a residence, not just traveling) you will be able to use the services of the city/ward you live in. That includes the disability services.

Once you have a place to live you can go into city hall and talk with the welfare services desk and your child can get a disability ID and a case worker etc. It will take a few months as they will have you go to a doctor to evaluate you’re child’s needs to send back to city hall to see what services they can receive, and then a bit more time to actually start receiving service.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your reply Josh, really appreciate it’s

My kid is non verbal and we speak French and English at home , do you think it would be possible for him to still attend to special schools etc ? He would be communicating with a picture book / iPad , signing and a few English words.

      Have a lovely day
