Deaf in Japan
Deaf in Japan
Hello! I am a US citizen who is deaf traveling to Japan for the first time! I’ll be visiting Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Hakone, Kamakura and Tokyo.
I am aware that Japan has a sign language known as JSL, a completely different language from ASL and IS (international sign). I’ve taken some efforts to learn a bit of JSL and Japanese.
I would like to know where in Japan, if any, are there large populations of Deaf Japanese people so that I may interact and immerse myself. I have found some Deaf owned businesses in Tokyo and plan on visiting them, but would like to see more.
Also, what is the accessibility culture like for Deaf folks in Japan? I will be visiting some museums but I am having trouble navigating the request for accommodations of a sign language interpreter, if available at all.
