Bringing own portable scooter to Japan – insurance?

  • Bringing own portable scooter to Japan – insurance?

Hello, my wife will be traveling to Japan and she will bring her own lightweight portable scooter on the plane. We live in The Netherlands and here you need an insurance to use the scooter on the streets (comparable with a car insurance). Do you need this kind of insurance also in Japan? The thing is that it’s unclear if our own insurance is also valid in Japan (our insurance company don’t know this – we have a european “green card” with all countries in which the insurance is valid, but Japan is not in this list). So, my question is: do you need an insurance and if so can you get one when you arrive in Japan?

I’ve never heard of needing insurance for a scooter here.

We’re talking about a mobility scooter, right? Can you send an image or link to the scooter?

Hello, thank you for your reply. This is the type of our mobility scooter. Maybe it’s enough have a travel insurance for Japan? As said: here it’s regarded as a slow vehicle and therefore you need to be insured in case you cause damage to someone else.

For this you wouldn’t need a license, but travel insurance is always good to have.
