  • Are “No-Step” buses available from Hiroshima to Hamada?

Hi, I will be traveling with my 91 year old friend this fall. She grew up in Hamada and wishes to visit again. She does not need a wheelchair but is unable to do steps. I see that there is bus service from Hiroshima to Hamada but I am concerned she will not be able to get on and off the bus. Thank you for any help or suggestions.

Hey there. Just to confirm, you are talking about the Hamada across the mountains from Hiroshima on the Sea of Japan side in Shimane prefecture?

If that is the case, then it will likely be a highway coach bus with 4-5 steps up into the carriage….

      Thank you Josh,

That is correct- the Hamada in Shimane.

I appreciate your quick response and it is very helpful to know that.

Josh is right about the highway buses but do bear in mind that there will be handrails to help with the boarding and you will have plenty of time to get on board. My (limited) experience with the buses is to contact the bus operator well in advance and raise the issue with them. The website I use for booking bus journeys only allows reservations one month in advance which I can cope with because my daughter can climb the stairs so as long as we can get a reservation we are fine.

Thank you Maury for your quick response. It is helpful to know about the handrails and reservations. We will have my friend Tomie practice stepping up before we go.
