From KyoToursJapan on the Accessible Japan website:

Hey everyone. Just wanted to let you guys know that there’s a temple in eastern Kyoto that is perfect for visitors with mobility issues. Eikando in the Nanzenji area is equipped with ramps and even an elevator This is the only elevator that I know of in a temple in Kyoto!

The Buddha statue at Eikando is especially favored by those with mobility limitations, as the story behind it is all about how the statue itself can walk and lead us to paradise. The temple is also known for it’s wonderful architecture and colorful painted beams.

You’ll have to let the staff know when you arrive that you need assistance throughout the temple, but they’ll do all they can to accommodate you.

    Enjoy!
