We stayed at an ryokan hotel with a private onsen in Hakone. My husband’s power wheelchair had no issues rolling into the room, elevator, or onsite restaurant. We requested the “Western-style” room to sleep on mattresses instead of floor futons. The room had a private onsen on outdoor balcony surrounded by bushes and small trees.

My husband uses a cane to stand up out of chair and was able to use shower before crawling and climbing into the deep outdoor tub. He loved the experience of soaking in hot mineral water in peaceful setting … until the traffic noise increased before sunset. That’s when we realized there was a road nearby on the other side of the bushes. But after enjoying kaiseki dinner, the road noise was much, much quieter. Enjoyed the evening soaking, looking up hoping the clouds would clear.

Woke up next morning listening to birds outside, less clouds, brisk temperature. Good time for another shower and morning soaking experience.

Afterwards, we enjoyed the Japanese breakfast at the onsite restaurant. Wish we could have stayed a second night.

Name of ryokan in Hakone is: Mori No Kaze Hakone Sengokuhara

Our travel agency was TokudAw and they arranged booking and transportation and carefully took care of his power chair.
