Places to see in Sydney: Sydney Harbour
Sydney Harbour | Address: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Sydney Harbour is a part of Port Jackson, but particularly we will be looking at a few of the sightseeing and attractions located in and around the Sydney Harbour area.
Circular Quay, a good place to start and acts as an excellent hub to many of the local attractions. Throughout the day you can catch various ferries traveling to and from this location as well as other transportation options such as harbour cruises, buses, trains and taxis.
- Accessibility: There are wheelchair accessible Ferries (for manual, power, scooter, etc.), access may be varied with tide levels, in which additional assistance may be required. It may be best to be flexible timewise when planning around using ferries. You can find additional accessible transportation information from Australia’s Government of New South Wales here: https://transportnsw.info/travel-info/using-public-transport/accessible-travel/accessible-ferry-travel.
Sydney Harbour Bridge, being one of the notable landmarks of Sydney, it’s hard to miss especially in the harbour. You have several ways to view this wonderful structure, the most common being crossing the bridge via railway, car, bicycle, or strolling over the walkway. For those more ambulatory, you can gear up and get a Bridge-Climb tour of the southern half, climbing to the arch-top of the bridge. While this gives a unique view of the bridge, it’s still difficult to see many parts of the structure while atop it. To get a broader view you can ride a ferry around and under the bridge, or even ride a harbour dining cruise (which is even more impressive in the evening or during festival events when the bridge is lit up).
- Accessibility: As stated above, there are wheelchair accessible Ferries. Not all harbor cruises may be accessible, it is recommended that you contact cruise booking ahead of time. The Bridge-Climb tour is not wheelchair accessible.
Sydney Opera House, with its multiple shell-like roof design it may be the world’s most recognizable opera house. Concerts, Theatre, Poetry, Art, Shows, and many more performances take place here throughout the year. However, what’s inside isn’t the only thing worth seeing. The buildings architecture can be inspiring, and if you happen to find yourself here during a festival (or are planning for that reason), then you may be in for an extra treat. For example, during “Vivid Sydney” (end of May) the Sydney Opera House is illuminated with vibrant colors visible from all over the Harbour.
With these options and more nearby, it’s certain you’ll find something that piques your interest.
- Accessibility: Sydney Opera House is wheelchair accessible (may need to contact staff members to access elevators). Accessible toilets are available in multiple locations throughout. Courtesy wheelchairs are available for loan (limited supply). Service Animals are allowed. Audio devices for those with visual disabilities are available for select performances. Some performances also have options for those with hearing disabilities. For more Accessibility information: https://www.sydneyoperahouse.com/visit-us/accessibility.html
