• Hey guys,

I really quickly created an account to post this. I’ll be studying in Yamanashi, Japan, for 4 years starting September 2025, and since Yamanashi doesn’t have an abundance of buses and trains like the bigger cities, I wanted to get a Gentsuki license for a moped to make my day-to-day travelling easier (and I also wanna try my hand at camping). However, I am almost entirely blind in my right eye, with only a small fraction of my peripheral vision left, hence my handle. I can still see fine with my left eye, but I have a blind spot on my far right and a lack of accurate depth perception at close range. I’ve been told that I need to be able to see the road signs and that the eyesight test isn’t that thorough, but I wanted to make sure I could get a license with my disability.

I’ve been doing quite a bit of research into this, but my circumstances are rather unique, and thus I’m lacking specific answers. I thought I’d try my luck here after stumbling upon tabifolk by pure coincidence. Thanks in advance for any help

      • Hello, glad you found us! We can maybe look into this, but first I would suggest trying to get the equivalent in your own country as an international license, then you could just use that.

        • @joshgrisdale Hey there, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I’m currently studying in the UK, and I have about 1 and a half months of time between returning to my home country and going to Japan. Aside from that, I’ve gotten advice from the doctors I’m seeing in my home country that I was unlikely to get a full driving license in my home country, but seeing as a Gentsuki license can be obtained by 16-and-ups in Japan, I thought that I would have a chance for that one.

        • Hi

Just recently, a friend of mine developed an eye disease and was writing down information about his driver’s license, so I will write that down here.

“If the visual acuity in one eye is less than 0.3, the visual acuity in the better eye must be 0.7 or above and the visual field must be at least 150 degrees to the left and right.”

It seems there are some pretty strict rules. Don’t give up, try living in Japan and consult with the local government!

          Best Regards.

          Tak
