We will be in Japan in one month! We are bringing our Atto mobility scooter. Does anyone know if the local buses that are accessible allow for us to bring it on? My wife can navigate some spaces with canes. Do the busses “kneel”?
Josh Grisdale3 CommentsYes, the regular route buses kneel and the driver will provide a ramp for you to get on. (In the city, they are nearly all accessible but as you go to the country, they may still have non-kneeling buses on some routes.)
Inter-city highway buses do not though. 🙁
As for the scooter, maybe @ohayotravel can comment on how is past client faired. In the past scooters were often not allowed on trains and buses due to a large turning radius and not being able to exit in a timely manner with a crowd. Rules have improved quite a bit as scooters have gotten smaller but some staff may be inexperienced and be hesitant since it is not a “wheelchair”… (scooters are rare in Japan.)
@Josh Grisdale thank you. I think we will fold up the scooter and have her get on the bus with the canes and I’ll “roll” the scooter on. We love the Atto and I am getting good at folding it up and setting it up.
1@ProfKT Sounds like a plan. Though, my sincere hope is that more people travel with scooters it will become more normalized to the point it doesn’t need to be asked 🙂
