Looking for wheelchair accessible nature trails or outdoor nature focused activities, wildlife sanctuaries etc in the North East of England please
Louise and Geordie Travels8 CommentsI hope you find somewhere Louise
1Hi @WheelieWifey, are you local to the area? I only ask because I hope some of my suggestions won’t be a bit too ‘obvious’. Keilder Forest offers some accessible trails, I know firsthand because when I was a kid I visited a centre there and spent a few days exploring. There’s also the Rising Sun Country Park in Benton which I love and have strolled around in my wheelchair more than once. Other than that though, I am struggling to think of somewhere specific where I can say “Yep, from start to finish this trail is remote and accessible’. When I was a kid my dad lived in North Northumberland and we would often just drive to somewhere rural, ditch the car and try and get as far as we could with my chair — but I admit, it’s not easy, and we often ended up walking on country roads instead (which is not ideal for obvious safety reasons). Have you seen this web page? https://gosmartergoactive.co.uk/latest-news/accessible-routes-for-exploring-north-east-england/
@Geordie Travels well I’m in Durham yes but I’ve only lived here 3 years as I’m a southerner haha
My wife’s also a southerner but came to Newcastle 10 years ago and loved the north east so much she never went back south. We’ve both said we will never leave now. I’ve only been in a wheelchair for a year now before that we used to go a lot of different places on the motorcycle so I’m afraid I didn’t really pay much attention to accessibility but I’m really missing that time in nature now so any suggestions are appreciated thank you
1You’ve picked a lovely part of the world to live in. I am very homesick these days and miss the North East terribly. We have so many beautiful places to explore there. I wish you the best of luck on your mission to find accessible trails, and please do share them with us once you find them. I will be returning home for a visit in December so if you have some new suggestions for me by then, I will love ot hear about them!
@Geordie Travels aww yes of course and where are you located now? I’ll definitely keep you posted on any adventures I have and maybe we can all meet for coffee when you’re home and talk about our experiences. I’m in my garden currently watching the fish in the pond with my pet ducks so that’s kinda being in nature 😅
