I recently was involved with filming a promotion for accessible restaurants in Japan with a Paralympic athlete and thought I’d share about the restaurants we visited here. (I’ll put the second one in a different post so the pictures don’t get mixed up.)
The first place was a teppanyaki place (food grilled on hot metal surface in your table) called Ginza Sakuzuki. The owner’s son has down syndrome and wanted to create a restaurant where anyone can enjoy classy dining.
Even the sign outside lists it has an accessible toilet and ostomate facilities for those with colostomy bags. There is a large elevator with low buttons. The toilet is big, but unfortunately does not have a backrest. All tables have removable seats and are high enough for most wheelchairs. If it is not high enough, extenders can be added to raise the table.
It is also the first place in Japan I saw that has an evacuation chair for those who cannot walk!
