tabifolk talks: Meg from KultureCity – Sensory-Inclusive Travel with KultureCity

Traveling should be an exciting and enriching experience for everyone, yet for individuals with sensory processing challenges, it can be overwhelming. In a recent episode of Tabifolk Talks, we had the pleasure of speaking with Meg Klinghoffer from KultureCity, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting sensory accessibility and inclusion. Meg shared insights on how KultureCity is working to make travel and public spaces more inclusive, ensuring that individuals with sensory needs can participate fully in life’s experiences.
What is Sensory Accessibility?
Sensory accessibility focuses on accommodating individuals who experience sensory processing challenges, including those with autism, ADHD, PTSD, and other conditions. These individuals may find certain environments, such as airports, concerts, or crowded events, overwhelming due to excessive noise, bright lights, or strong smells. By creating more sensory-friendly spaces, organizations can help people feel more comfortable and included.
How KultureCity is Changing the Landscape
KultureCity is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to sensory inclusion. Their mission is to ensure that individuals with sensory needs are not left out of important life experiences. One of their key initiatives is the Sensory Inclusive Certification, which provides organizations with specialized training and resources to accommodate sensory-sensitive individuals.
Through this program, staff at venues such as stadiums, theme parks, and restaurants are trained to recognize and assist individuals with sensory challenges. In addition, KultureCity provides Sensory Bags, which contain items like noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, strobe reduction glasses, and communication cards to help individuals self-regulate in overstimulating environments.
Sensory Rooms and Mobile Sensory Stations
One of KultureCity’s most impactful projects is the development of Sensory Rooms, designated spaces where individuals can take a break from sensory overload. These rooms are equipped with dimmable lighting, comfortable seating, and calming visual stimuli to create a peaceful environment. KultureCity has also introduced Mobile Sensory Stations and the Sensory Activation Vehicle (SAV), bringing sensory relief to large-scale events like the Super Bowl and New Year’s Eve in Times Square.
Expanding Access Through Partnerships
KultureCity has partnered with some of the world’s biggest names to expand sensory inclusion. Their collaboration with Coldplay has made their concerts more accessible, while their partnership with Carnival Cruise Line ensures sensory-friendly accommodations on cruise ships. Other venues, including airports, zoos, and amusement parks, are also joining the movement to provide sensory-friendly spaces.
The KultureCity App and Koji AI Tool
The KultureCity App is a game-changer for sensory-inclusive travel. It allows users to find nearby sensory-inclusive venues and access social stories, which help individuals prepare for new environments by walking them through what to expect.
Another innovative tool is Koji, an AI-powered communication system built into the app. Designed for non-speaking or minimally verbal individuals, Koji generates suggested responses to help facilitate conversations. It is completely free, making it an invaluable resource for individuals and families.
The “Make the Nevers Possible” Initiative
KultureCity’s mission extends beyond training and certifications. Their Make the Nevers Possible initiative focuses on creating opportunities for individuals who have previously been unable to participate in certain experiences due to sensory challenges. From attending live concerts to flying on airplanes, this program helps break down barriers and ensure that no one is excluded due to sensory needs.
The Future of Sensory-Inclusive Travel
As awareness of sensory needs grows, KultureCity continues to expand globally, working with organizations across the world to improve accessibility. Their efforts highlight the importance of inclusivity, not just in travel but in all aspects of life.
At Tabifolk, we are passionate about accessible travel. If you have a sensory-friendly travel experience or tip, we encourage you to share it on our Sensory Friendly Travel group. Together, we can help make travel more inclusive for everyone.
